How the sculptures are made in my woodshop

Making these wooden sculptures has been a very rewarding experience for me and I am sure it will be for you, too.

This page contains a brief description of the process I go through to make the sculptures in my woodworking shop at home. In the DVDs, I go into much greater detail. The DVDs will guide you through the process so that you will make fewer mistakes than I did.

The materials and tools are really quite simple: wood, bandsaw, wood glue, nails, 4.5″ and 7″ grinder, drum sander, lacquer, and sprayer. The grinders and drum sander have proven to be the best time-saving devices in my shop.

 Here is a rundown of the steps I go through:

  1. Cut the shapes out of the wood with my bandsaw.
  2. Glue the shapes together and put nails in the proper places to keep the pieces from shifting.
  3. Use the 4.5 inch and 7 inch grinders to remove the edges and smooth out the shapes.

  4. Sand the sculptures with a drum sander.
  5. Spray the sculptures with lacquer.

At one time, my shop had eight people making these wooden sculptures and we sold thousands of these every year. This is something you could do, too.
